Whipped Back Stitch Tutorial

Whipped Back Stitch is almost always what I substitute if a pattern calls for backstitch or I need to outline something. I prefer the clean continuous look over traditional back stitch, and it is very easy to do!

Created by: Mollie Johanson

To start, backstitch the entire length of the line you are working on. Then bring your needle back up through the same hole as your start point. You may need to move the knot out of the way. Then without piercing the fabric again, bring your needle under your first stitch and then wrap (or whip) it around to the top of your next stitch and tuck in under.

Continue whipping your stitches through every backstitch until you reach the end of your line, then take your thread back down through the same hole you ended your backstitch in and secure your thread.

Additional Tips!
When you are doing your initial line of backstitches, make sure the tension is good but don’t pull too tight or it will be hard to get your needle underneath them to whip.

Additionally, you can use a different color to whip and create a fun striped effect!
